The 8 best free DNS server applications

read

Domain Name System or simply DNS is a naming system for computer networks that use the IP protocol. DNS can and does assign names to IP addresses or other names on the Internet or other network and allows a server or service to be found on a server using a name.

DNS is used to map IP addresses to names so that a network administrator can use names to communicate or simply remember machine names, locations, domain names, etc.

Every time you go to a web page, the browser looks up its address in the DNS system. The faster the nearest DNS server is located, the faster the web page you visited opens it.

The use of the appropriate DNS is crucial for the performance and the overall speed of our Internet connection and not only since with the use of appropriate DNS addresses we can in addition to the speed to ensure the security of our network from malicious attacks and suspicious websites even enhancing anonymity.

DNSBench

1.

DNSBench is a small portable application (no installation required) that will search and show us the fastest ones. After downloading the app! we run it and wait a while for it to search and show us the results. It is important at the time of the test not to run any other application on the Internet and not to upload or download files so that the results are completely reliable.

Once the measurement is finished, click on the Name Servers option where in the first row you will see the DNS of your connection and below a large number of different DNS Servers. Now press the Run Benchmark button and the program will start evaluating them. Wait a while until the measurement is finished and you will see a rating next to each DNS Server. It will show the fastest DNS in the first rows.

Click on the Tabular Data button if you want to see the exact measurements for each DNS Server separately and click on Conclusion to see the application's observations and suggestions in the comments. If you find that the DNS Servers you are using have a higher response speed in simple words are slower, choose the first in the DNS ranking.

Chris PC DNS Switch

2.

This time instead of some guide and procedures with which we will have to intervene manually to change the DNS settings on our network card we preferred a very simple and easy solution since we assumed that many of our readers probably do not have the necessary experience.

The solution we chose is called ChrisPC DNS Switch and it does nothing more than what its name suggests, with one difference, we don't need to intervene anywhere and everything is done automatically with a few clicks. The application provides a simple, comprehensive and completely understandable menu, with the help of which you can choose the network card on which you wish to change the default DNS of your connection.

This way depending on what you choose you can protect your anonymity and privacy and in this case choose a server from a list of groups with a default Anonymous DNS or you can choose to use Secure DNS servers that filter websites which are potential threats to your computer (avoiding viruses, malware, trojans and malware).

You can also increase the security of your connection especially when it is used by children by preventing them from linking to websites that may encourage violence, drugs and of course websites that have been labeled as pornographic. Finally you could simply select a faster DNS using any of the predefined DNS groups selected based on the above attributes.

I would recommend, if you are interested in speed, not to prefer this function since as we have already analyzed in our previous article the speed of a DNS Server is affected by many factors and while objectively a DNS Server can be very fast but it does not mean that applies to the whole world. So if you are only interested in this I would recommend you to read our previous article.

The free version of the program has the following options:

  •  Quick DNS change.
  • Change the DNS of your computer with just 1 click.
  • DNS database with 30+ DNS servers
  • Protect your browsing with secure DNS servers that filter out isotopes that pose a potential threat to your computer (virus, malware, trojans) and isotope blocking for minors.
  • Use Family Safe DNS to block isotopes or those that encourage violence, drugs, and misconduct.
  • Use anonymous DNS while surfing the Internet to protect your privacy.
  • Change and reset DNS settings.
  •  Add new custom DNS servers to the database
