File Manager: 7 selected free applications to manage your files in Windows

It's been a few decades since the first File Commander was created to ease the user into the clunky DOS environment. Later, others followed and especially in the early years of windows it was a software that was not missing from almost any user's toolbox.

Nowadays, of course, Windows has nothing to do with the old ones and has evolved into a fairly friendly operating system with many features. However, even today there are File Commander-type applications that are used by many.

The reason is that it simplifies the usual procedures and frees us from opening many windows through a very simple, understandable and completely usable environment.

Unreal Commander

It is an all-in-one file manager with many features. But let's see what we can do with him. We can perform all the usual actions required to manage our files such as copy, transfer, create folders, see images, read documents, listen to music and also manage compressed files of the ZIP, RAR, ACE, CAB, JAR type , TAR, LHA, etc.

In addition to the usual tasks such as viewing, editing, copying, moving, deleting or creating a new folder, it also has a built-in FTP client to quickly upload files to an FTP server. Let's now look at some of the most basic settings before we start using it. Choose the path Configurations-Options-Icons to change the dimensions of the app icons.

In the same path, now select Conficurations-Options-Graphic Themes and choose from the available skins to give it the look you like. In the same basic path, select Conficurations-Options-Colors to change the color of the admin windows and the color of the disk field. Finally, choose how you want to view the contents of your files. Select comments for list and Thumbnails for thumbnails.

Commander is a free file management and image viewer program. It is very similar to the well-known Total Commader file management program and is divided into two screens, you can copy and move files and folders to decompress RAR and ZIP files to view CR2, BMP, WMF, EMF, JPEG, PNG, MNG, GIF images, PCX, ICO, CUR and HIPS, you can even view thumbnails of images, use the program as an FTP client to compare directory contents and more.

File Voyager

I consider FileVoyager to be one of the best free programs in the file management software category. It includes a dual window layout with a full menu for file or folder transfer tasks between sources and destinations.

It includes a large collection of tools and functions such as browsing your hard drives, folders (real or virtual), files and FTP / FTPS destinations in a unified way. It has browsing capabilities in various viewing modes, it naturally includes the classic file and folder management functions such as (rename, copy, move, link, delete, recycle).

It also includes features for compressing files in ZIP, 7Zip, GZip, BZip2, XZ, and WIM formats and decompressing in ARJ, CAB, XAR, Z, RAR, LZH, LZMA, ISO, WIM, and many more formats. You can also view and listen to almost any audio or video format, compare files or folders sync folders, quickly preview any file format and view ebooks and comicbooks in PDF, EPUB, MOBI, DJVU, CBR, CBZ, XPS format. It will run on Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8.x Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Immersive Explorer

Alternative to the default file explorer included with Windows (known as Windows Explorer). It is designed to provide an amazing user experience by focusing on the content instead of hiding it behind icons. It allows the user to avoid opening different applications and switching between multiple windows when doing tasks as simple as viewing an image, thanks to the built-in viewer.

Although it is not a classic Windows application (designed around the "Metro" user interface instructions), it is optimized for tablets and computers with touch screens, but also offers great convenience for users who use a mouse - keyboard (with features such as scroll-to-zoom, keyboard navigation).

Immersive Explorer uses graphical hardware acceleration to display motion and transitions making it the most modern of the default Windows File Explorer. However, you should be aware that it is not a complete Windows Shell replacement application but an alternative for exploring Windows that however do not even need to be installed with administrator privileges.

Nexus File

You can manage many files very quickly and easily, classes superior to the classic windows explorer. Mass Rename, Dual Panels, FTP Client, Compressed Files, Change Appearance, Split and Merge Files, Compare Folders, Tabs and Multilingual Support are just some of its features.

Altap Salamander

Free file management application with a smart interface, which includes all popular file formats as well as support for shared files and has built-in FTP and SFTP Clients (including all plugins) since version 4.0 became free for both commercial and non-commercial use. Users of older versions of Salamander can upgrade to version 4.0 free of charge.

Version 4.0 requires Windows 7 or later. The most popular network protocols such as FTP, FTPS, SCP or SFTP are supported. It also has a built-in password scrambler and the ability to protect your sensitive files with strong encryption algorithms. The open architecture allows extending Altap Salamander with custom plugins or automating common tasks using scripts written in any language supported by the Windows Script host, such as JScript or VBScript. Finally, Altap Salamander has built-in very useful features such as File Comparator, Undelete plugin for file recovery and more.

Double commander

Application, open source file manager with two tables in parallel. It is inspired by Total Commander but has many new features. It includes Unicode support, a multi-tool for renaming files, customizable columns, internal text editor by pressing (F4) with syntax hightlighting. Supported compressed file types: ZIP, GZ TAR, TGZ, LZMA and BZ2, RPM, CPIO, DEB, RAR, extended search function with full text search in any file or folder and many more.
