
If SMART is enabled on a hard drive, the system administrator can obtain detailed information from the hard drive to determine a possible future failure of the hard drive.
SMART monitors potential long-term drive failure indicators such as 'Spin Up Time', Start/Stop count, number of hours on and hard drive temperature.
Displays the current SMART attribute values, along with the threshold value for that attribute. If a characteristic falls below its limit, the drive cannot guarantee that it will be able to meet its specification in the future.
Keep in mind that SMART characteristics change slowly over time and are one of the most reliable indicators for diagnosing the lifespan of a particular drive.
DiskCheckup monitors these changes for a long time and predicts the date (if available) of the Threshold Exceeded Condition (TEC), which is displayed in the main window.
It can also detect and set the Host Protected Area (HPA) and Device Configuration Overlay (DCO) sizes. HPAs/DCOs are hidden areas of the hard drive that contain data that is not accessible to the user.
These areas can be removed to reveal the data hidden in these areas. It also displays device information such as drive geometry, serial number, model number, media rotation rate, and supported functions.
DiskCheckup can be configured to send email alerts when a SMART attribute has been detected to be less than the allowed threshold value. Such threshold values are determined by the hard drive manufacturer.
For a drive to be considered "good", all SMART attributes must be above these values. Finally, it displays disk activity in real time.
