How do apps work in the background?
To understand whether closing apps saves battery, we first need to look at how app management works in modern operating systems, such as Android and iOS.
1️⃣ Memory and Power Management
- Modern operating systems use smart algorithms to manage applications in the background.
- If an application is not actively used, the operating system "freezes" it so that it does not consume resources.
2️⃣ Background Apps DO NOT Always Consume Battery
- Most apps that appear as "open" in the recent apps list aren't actually running.
- If they don't use data or GPS, their impact on battery life is minimal.
3️⃣ Reloading Apps Can Consume More Power
- When we close an app completely and open it again, the phone has to reload all of its data.
- This process consumes more energy than leaving the application in standby mode.
When is closing applications useful?
Although we generally don't need to close applications often, there are cases where this can be beneficial:
✅ When an application is malfunctioning
- If an app is crashing or behaving abnormally, closing it and restarting it may solve the problem.
✅ When an app consumes too much power
- There are applications, such as navigation applications (Google Maps, Waze) or streaming applications (Spotify, YouTube), that may consume energy even if you are not using them.
✅ When you want to save RAM
- If your phone has low RAM and you're experiencing lag, closing apps can temporarily improve performance.
✅ When you protect your privacy
- Some apps continue to record data even when you're not using them. If you want to limit access, closing them is a good practice.
How to really save battery on your phone
Instead of constantly closing apps, you can follow more effective practices to preserve your battery:
(I.e. Reduce Screen Brightness
- The screen is one of the biggest power consumers. Use custom brightness or enable auto-adjust mode.
(I.e. Turn off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS when you don't need them
- These features can consume a significant amount of battery if left on unnecessarily.
🌙 Use Power Saving Mode
- Most devices have a power saving mode that reduces background activity and limits battery-draining apps.
📲 Turn Off Notifications and Automatic Updates
- Some apps are constantly updating in the background, using up battery power. Set updates to only happen when you're connected to Wi-Fi.
(I.e. Avoid Live Wallpapers and Widgets
- Dynamic wallpapers and widgets that are constantly updated require more power than a static background.
