Today we will talk about one of the most impressive but also terrifying technological achievements of our time: the deepfakesIf you've never heard the term before, get ready to enter a world where your eyes and ears may be... deceiving you!
In this article we will analyze:
- What are deepfakes and how do they work?
- How can you recognize them?
- Where are they used (legally and illegally)
- What are the biggest threats they pose?
- What can you do to protect yourself?
If you think deepfakes are just an internet joke, Think again! The world of artificial intelligence is evolving rapidly and knowing how to distinguish truth from lies is now more important than ever!
What are Deepfakes and how do they work?
🇧🇷 An AI system is "trained" with thousands of images and videos of a person.
(I.e. Another AI (the "judge") tries to figure out if the result is fake or real.
(I.e. With each repetition, the fake becomes more and more realistic..
Characteristics of Deepfakes: How to recognize them
To spot a deepfake, look carefully at the following characteristics:
🔴 1. Unnatural facial movements
Deepfakes are often difficult to reproduce natural expressions and small details, such as the blinking of the eyes.
🟢 2. Asynchrony of sound and lip movement
If the lips don't match the sound perfectly, then it might be a deepfake.
🔵 3. Strange skin texture
The skin may look too smooth or too cloudy, without natural resources or minor imperfections.
🟠 4. Deformities at the edges of the face
Look around the ears, hair, or chin—if there's any distortion, something's wrong.
🟣 5. Inconsistencies in lighting and shadows
Deepfakes usually they do not correctly render shadows and natural lighting.
Where are Deepfakes used?
Deepfakes have many applications, such a legitimate as well as illegal:
✅ Cinema & Television – They are used to create digital actors or improving special effects.
✅ Education & Historical Reenactments – They can "come alive" historical figures.
❌ Fake News & Propaganda – They are used for misinformation and political frauds.
❌ Fraud & Extortion – Some use them for voice spoofing and user deception.
How to protect yourself from Deepfakes
🔍 Use deepfake detection tools, As the Deepware Scanner or Sensity AI.
🧐 Check the video source – If it comes from an unreliable source, it may be fake.
(I.e. Pay attention to small details – Eye movements, shadows, sound synchronization.
???? Don't share content if you're not sure. – Misinformation spreads quickly!
🔬 Complementary Detection Techniques
In addition to specialized tools, there are also general techniques that can help detect deepfakes:
✅ Eye Movement & Blink Analysis – Most deepfakes do not reproduce correctly the natural twinkle of the eyes.
✅ Inconsistencies in Shading & Lighting – Deepfakes often have unnatural shadows or wrong direction of lighting.
✅ Audio Analysis & Lip Sync – Some deepfake videos have asynchrony between voice and lip movement.
✅ Using AI-based Forensics – Tools like Forensic Video Analysis they can examine pixel distortions.
