How to Check If a Site is Secure
🔴 1. Check the HTTPS Protocol
One of the first things you should pay attention to is whether the site uses HTTPS instead HTTPHTTPS (HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure) means that the website has SSL/TLS encryption, which protects the data transferred between the user and the server.
How to check it:
- Look at the address bar of your browser. If the address starts with "https://", the site is more secure than one that starts with "http://".
- If there is one locked padlock next to the URL, this means the site has an SSL certificate.
🟠 2. Pay Attention to the Domain Name
Hackers often create fake websites that look like well-known and trusted ones, but have slightly different domain names (e.g. "amaz0n.com" instead of "amazon.com").
How to check it:
- Read the site name carefully for any spelling errors.
- Make sure the domain extension is correct (e.g. ".com", ".gr").
- If you receive an email directing you to a site, check if the URL matches the actual official website.
🟡 3. Check Security Certificates
Trusted sites use security certificates to prove their authenticity.
How to check it:
- Click on the lock in the browser address bar and see who issued the SSL certificate.
- If the certificate has been issued by well-known companies, such as DigiCert, Let's Encrypt, GlobalSign, etc., then the site is probably safe.
🟢 4. Check for Suspicious Pop-up Ads
Malicious sites are often filled with pop-ups and misleading advertisements that urge users to download files or enter personal data.
How to check it:
- If a site displays too many pop-ups, it is probably not secure.
- If it asks you to download suspicious software or give out personal information for no reason, leave immediately.
🔵 5. Check the Site's Reviews and Reputation
If you're not sure about a site, you can do a Google search to see what other users are saying.
How to check it:
- Look for reviews on Trustpilot, SiteJabber or in other reliable forums.
- If there are many reports of scams or poor user experience, avoid the site.
🟣 6. Use Security Audit Tools
There are online tools that can analyze the security of a website and warn you of potential risks.
Useful tools:
- Google Safe Browsing (https://transparencyreport.google.com/safe-browsing/search)
- Norton Safe Web (https://safeweb.norton.com/)
- VirusTotal (https://www.virustotal.com/gui/home/url)
