🌐 How to Change the Web Browser in Windows 11
Windows 11 wants you to use Edge, but you prefer Chrome or Firefox? Learn how to make your favorite web browser always open first - with simple steps that everyone will understand!
The most popular - quick and easy
Protects your privacy better
Automatically blocks ads
Has free VPN built-in
First, you need to have the browser you want installed. Go to the official website (e.g. google.com/chrome) and download it. Caution: Always download from the official page to be safe!
- Press simultaneously Win + I (the button with the Windows logo and the letter I)
- A settings window will open.
- On the left, click on "Applications"
- Then click on "Default apps"
- You will see a search bar at the top.
- Type the name of your browser (e.g. "Chrome" or "Firefox")
- It will appear in the list - click on it
- You will see a list of various options.
- You will see options like ".htm", ".html", "HTTP", "HTTPS"
- For each of these, click on "Change"
- Select your browser from the list.
- Repeat for all options (there are few - don't worry!)
Sometimes, even after you make the changes, some links still open in Edge. This is because Microsoft wants to keep Edge as the preference.
- Open your email or an application.
- Click on a link
- If it opens in the browser you chose - well done! You did it!
- If not, repeat steps 3-4
- 🛡️ Ad Protection: Install AdBlock or uBlock Origin to block annoying ads
- 🔐 Password Security: Use a password manager like LastPass or Bitwarden
- 🔍 Change Search Engine: If you don't like Bing, try Google or DuckDuckGo.
- 📱 Synchronization: Connect to your account to have your favorites everywhere
🎉 Congratulations!
You now have full control over the web browser on your computer! Even though Microsoft is trying to keep you on Edge, you have the freedom to choose. Remember: The best browser is the one that suits you! Some prefer the fast simplicity of Chrome, others the privacy of Firefox, and still others the extra features of Brave or Opera.
