Automatic Application Startup
How to Control and Optimize Them with Task Scheduler and Startup Folders
Every time we turn on our computer, many applications "send a signal" to start immediately. This can make it seem slow, even if we're not running anything. In this article, you'll learn, step by step and without complicated language, how to control and optimize these automatic startups.
🚀 Why check startup apps?
Faster startup
Fewer programs → shorter loading time
Less RAM usage
Apps you don't need don't consume resources
Longer battery life
Manual start reduces energy consumption
🔍 How to see which apps start automatically
Method A – "Startup" Folder
- He pressed Windows + R (the Windows logo button)
- In the window that opens, write
shell:startupand stepped on Enter - A folder will open. Any shortcuts within it will open automatically when the computer starts.
- If you find something you don't need, right-click → DeletionThe application remains installed, it just no longer launches automatically.
Method B – Task Scheduler
- He pressed Windows + R to open the window Run
- Type in
control schedtasksand stepped on Enter - It opens Task Scheduler
- In the left menu select Task Scheduler Library
- You will now see a list of all the tasks running at different times, including those that start with the computer.
- To stop a task, right-click on it → DisableIf you need it again, choose Enable
⚙️ Practical optimization steps
| Step | What are you doing | How does it help? |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Clean Startup folder | Delete unwanted shortcuts | Reduces the number of programs that open automatically |
| 2. Task Scheduler Review | Disable tasks you don't need | Prevents "hidden" startups that can slow down |
| 3. Check for updates | If the app is necessary, make sure it is up to date | New versions are usually lighter and faster |
| 4. Restart the computer | After the changes, reboot. | See the result: the computer will boot faster |
👤 Applications that start after login
Sometimes, programs don't appear in the folder Startup but they open when you log in to your account (e.g. cloud applications, messaging programs). To check them:
- Open it. Task Manager (pressed Ctrl + Shift + I)
- Go to the tab Startup
- A list of all the applications that are activated when you log in will appear.
- For each application you can choose Disable if you don't need it right away
🛠️ Third-party tools (for beginners)
If you don't want to experiment "manually" with Windows settings, you can use free programs that clearly show you which applications start automatically and allow you to enable or disable them with a single click:
CCleaner
Includes a "Startup" tab where you can easily view, disable, or remove applications that start with the system. Ideal for beginners.
Autoruns
A more advanced tool than Microsoft, but still simple to use. It displays every program that loads automatically, giving you complete control.
Startup Manager
Easy and clean interface, with "Enable" and "Disable" buttons. Ideal if you want to clean up the startup list without technical knowledge.
AdwCleaner
Removes unwanted programs that run in the background without you knowing. Great for cleaning up adware and unnecessary startup items.
Advanced SystemCare
It offers a "Startup Optimization" tool that automatically identifies applications that slow down startup and suggests improvements.
Quick Startup
A lightweight and free program that shows you a clean list of all startup applications. Ideal for old or slow computers.
Complete Internet Repair
In addition to cleaning up startup, it also fixes internet connection problems. Very useful if your apps are slow to load.
BleachBit
Open source program that cleans temporary files, cache, and unnecessary data. It can also help your computer boot faster.
💡 Tips for long-term management
- Every 2–3 months do a little check": open the folder again
shell:startupand Task Scheduler to check for any new applications - When installing new software, prefer the "manual launch" option, unless it is absolutely necessary (e.g. antivirus)
- If an application seems to "find" its way into Startup without you asking for it, it may be part of an update or adware - consider uninstalling or reinstalling it.
✅ Last step – Try it!
After completing the above steps, restart your computer. If everything went well, you will notice:
- Short start-up time
- Less traffic in the system
- More free RAM space
If something doesn't work, you can always revert to Task Scheduler or in the folder shell:startup and reactivate whatever you need.
