How to check, clean and replace your laptop fan.

🔧Guide to diagnosing, cleaning and replacing your laptop's fan.

Keep your laptop always cool and fast

If your laptop is getting too hot, making strange noises, or running slower than usual, the problem could be the fan. Don't worry! With this guide, you'll learn how to check if it's working properly and, if necessary, how to replace it.

🔍 How to Tell If the Fan is Working Properly
1 Listen and Observe

What to watch out for:

👂 Sound: When using your laptop, listen carefully. There should be a steady, quiet sound. If you hear crackling, hissing, or excessive noise, something is wrong.
💨 Airflow: Place your hand near the air vents (usually on the sides or back). If you don't feel any air coming out, the fan is probably not working.
2 Use Control Apps

There are free programs that can show you the status of the fan:

These programs show you:

✓ How hot are the laptop components?
✓ How fast does the fan spin?
💡 Important: If the temperature is too high (above 80°C) and the fan does not turn or turns very slowly, you have a problem!
3 Control from Computer Settings

Some laptops allow you to view fan information during startup:

1. When starting the laptop, repeatedly press the key F2 ή From (depends on model)
2. Look for a section called "Hardware Monitor" the "Diagnostics"
3. There you will find information about the fan speed.
⚠️ Attention: If you have detected a problem and decided to open the laptop, continue with the steps below. If you don't feel confident, it's best to take it to a technician!
🛠️ Preparing to Open the Laptop
What you will need:
🔧 Small screwdrivers
🔨 Plastic openings
⚡ Antistatic bracelet
📦 Box for screws
1 Close the Laptop Completely
Hold down the power button for 5-10 seconds to make sure it is completely turned off.
2 Disconnect All Cables
Unplug the charger.
If the battery comes out, remove it.
💚 Tip: Work on a clean surface and place a soft cloth under the laptop to avoid scratching it!
🔓 Opening the Back Cover
1 Find and Unscrew the Screws

He turned the laptop upside down and looked carefully:

The screws are usually in the corners and on the sides
Some may be hidden under stickers or rubber feet.
⚠️ Important: Put all the screws in a box! If they are different sizes, take a picture so you remember which one goes where.
Opening the Back Cover
2 Carefully Open the Cover

Now comes the trickiest part:

Take the plastic tool and start from a corner.
Gently push the tool between the cover and the body
Make small, gentle movements - don't rush!
If you feel a lot of resistance, stop and check if you missed a screw.
💡 Trick: The cover "clicks" when opened. Don't be afraid of the sound - it's normal!
3 Check for Cables

Before removing the cover completely, check to see if there are any cables connected. If there are, gently disconnect them by pulling straight out (not at an angle!).

Carefully Open the Cover
🌀 Fan Replacement
1 Locate the Fan

The fan looks like a small fan with blades. It is usually located near the hottest areas (next to the processor).

2 Disconnect the Cable
You will see a small wire connected to the fan
Gently pull it straight out (don't pull on the cable, grab the plug!)
📸 Tip: Take a picture before you disconnect anything - it will help you with reassembly!
3 Remove the Old Fan
Unscrew the screws holding the fan (usually 3-4 screws)
Carefully lift the fan.
Remove the Old Fan
4 Install the New One
Place the new fan in exactly the same position
Tighten the screws (not too tight - just enough to be stable)
Plug the cable into place (you will hear a small "click")
⚠️ Attention: Make sure the new fan is compatible with your laptop model! Search online for your model + "fan replacement" to find the right one.
🔄 Closing and Final Check
1 Relock the Cover
Connect any cables you had disconnected.
Place the back cover in place.
Press it gently until you hear the "clicks"
Tighten all the screws (start from the corners and work towards the center)
2 Function Test
Connect the battery and charger
Open the laptop.
Listen to see if the fan is operating smoothly.
Open a tracking app to confirm it is working properly.
📝 Useful Tips
  • Don't rush: Patience is the most important thing! If you rush, you might break something.
  • Take notes: Take photos at every step - they will save you when you get back in!
  • Cleaning: Since you've opened the laptop, it's worth cleaning out the dust with compressed air.
  • Search video: Before you start, search at YouTube "laptop model + fan replacement" - visual instructions help a lot!
  • Warranty: If your laptop is still under warranty, don't open it yourself - you'll lose it!
🎯 Note: If something goes wrong or you don't understand a step, stop and ask someone who does or take your laptop to a technician. It's better to pay for a repair than to risk breaking your laptop!
