Computer Shuts Down Suddenly

Are you working normally and suddenly your computer shuts down as if the power went out? This is one of the most characteristic signs that the power supply can no longer provide stable power.

It can happen at any time:

• while writing a document
• when you watch a movie
• in the middle of a game
• even when the computer is idle

If the computer shuts down without warning and without an error message, the power supply is one of the first suspects.

Strange Noises from the Computer Case

Do you hear a buzzing, hissing, crackling, or an "electrical" sound that wasn't there before?

The power supply has a fan and electronic components that, when they begin to wear out, produce sounds such as:

• hissing (often from the coils)
• creaking or clicking sounds
• loud noise from the fan
• buzzing sound that gets louder when the computer is stressed

These sounds indicate that the power supply is having difficulty functioning properly and needs to be checked.

The Screen Flickers or Stuck

If the image on the screen flickers, "freezes" or displays strange colors, many people think that the graphics card is to blame.

In fact, often the problem is the power supply not providing consistent power to the card. This can cause:

• image sticking
• sudden blackouts of the screen
• altered colors
• GPU error messages

If the screen flickers for no apparent reason, the power supply is a suspect that you shouldn't ignore.

Lags and Very Slow Computer

Has your computer suddenly become slow for no apparent reason? Programs are struggling to open, the mouse is stuck, and everything seems "heavy"?

When the power supply doesn't provide enough and consistent power, the processor, memory, and graphics card are forced to work slower to protect themselves. It's like trying to run on dead batteries – there's simply no power to function properly.

Burning Smell or Overheating

This is one of the most serious signs of damage. If you smell something like burnt plastic or electronic circuitry, immediately shut down the computer and unplug it.

The power supply may be overheating or have an internal short circuit. Also, if the computer case is much warmer than usual, especially at the back where the power supply is located, it is a sign that something is wrong.

The computer does not turn on at all.

You press the button and nothing happens? No lights, no fans, no sound?

This is a classic sign that the power supply has stopped working. Before you consider it completely burned out, check:

• if the power cord is connected correctly
• if the socket works
• if the on/off button on the back of the power supply is in the “ON” position
• if there is a safety switch that has tripped

If all of this is OK and the computer remains dead, then the power supply is probably broken.

It is Very Old (More than 5 Years)

Even if it hasn't had any problems, a power supply that has been in use for more than 5 years starts to enter the "danger zone." Over time, its internal components wear out, capacitors lose their efficiency, and the power supply is no longer as stable as when it was new.

If you've upgraded your computer in the meantime—for example, with a more powerful graphics card or more memory—the old power supply may no longer meet the system's needs. This increases the risk of instability and sudden shutdowns.
