The best CMD commands for managing wireless networks in Windows

The best CMD commands for managing wireless networks in Windows
💻 Learn how to use the most useful ones CMD commands for control, management and problem solving in Wi-Fi networks of Windows.

The Ultimate CMD Command Guide for Managing Wi-Fi in Windows (2025)

Wi-Fi has become essential in our daily lives - from browsing the internet to working remotely. While most of us use the familiar Windows menus, there is a much more powerful tool: the Command Prompt (CMD).

Think of the command prompt as a “secret control panel” for your computer. It’s a simple black window where you can type commands to do things that aren’t easily accessible from the regular menus.

Why use it? Because it is faster, more effective and gives you access to options not found elsewhere. And the best part? You don't need to be an expert - just follow our instructions!

📌 How do I open the Command Prompt?
Press the key Windows + R, write cmd and press Enter. For some commands you will need to open it as "Administrator" (right-click on CMD and select "Run as administrator").

📶 Basic Wi-Fi Commands

1 See All the Networks Your Computer "Remembers"
Every time you connect to a Wi-Fi network, your computer stores it. This command shows you the full list.
netsh wlan show profiles
💡 When is it useful: When you want to see how many networks you have saved or find the name of an old network you don't remember.
2 Recover Forgotten Wi-Fi Password
Forgot your Wi-Fi password? This command will show it to you!
netsh wlan show profile name="NetworkName" key=clear
💡 Important: Replace "Network_Name" with the actual network name (use command #1 to find it). The code will appear next to "Key Content".
3 Connect to a Network Quickly
Instantly connect to a saved network without searching through the list.
netsh wlan connect name="NetworkName"
4 Disconnect from Wi-Fi
Disconnect from the current network immediately.
netsh wlan disconnect
💡 Useful when: You want to change networks quickly or save battery.
5 Turn Computer into a Hotspot
Make your computer a Wi-Fi access point to share the internet with other devices (mobile phones, tablets).
netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=Your_Name key=Your_Password
To start the hotspot:
netsh wlan start hostednetwork
⚠️ Caution: The hotspot stops when you turn off your computer. To stop it manually: netsh wlan stop hostednetwork
6 View Current Connection Details
Displays information about the network you are currently connected to: signal strength, speed, channel.
netsh wlan show interfaces
💡 What to look for: "Signal" shows how strong the Wi-Fi is (100% = excellent). "Receive/Transmit rate" shows the speed.
7 Find All Available Networks
It displays all the Wi-Fi networks that your computer is currently "seeing".
netsh wlan show networks
8 Delete Saved Network
Remove a network from the saved list.
netsh wlan delete profile name="NetworkName"
💡 When is it useful: For old networks that you don't use or when you want to re-enter the password from the beginning.

⚙️ Advanced Settings

9 Check Auto Login
Choose whether you want the computer to automatically connect to a network or ask first.
netsh wlan set profileparameter name="NetworkName" connectionmode=manual
💡 Advice: Change "manual" to "auto" for automatic connection.
10 Set Network Priority Order
When there are multiple networks available, this command determines which one to connect to first.
netsh wlan set profileorder name="NetworkName" interface="Wi-Fi" priority=1
💡 Example: Set your home network to priority=1 and your office network to priority=2.
11 Create a Network Backup
Save all your networks and passwords to files - useful before reinstalling Windows.
netsh wlan export profile folder="C:\WiFiBackup" key=clear
⚠️ Note: First create the "WiFiBackup" folder on the C:\ drive or change the path to an existing folder.

🔧 Troubleshooting and Repair

12 Reset All Wi-Fi Settings
If you have a serious problem with Wi-Fi, this command resets everything to its original settings.
netsh wlan reset
⚠️ Caution: ALL saved networks will be deleted! Use command #11 first to keep copies.
13 Turn Wi-Fi off/on
Disable or enable the Wi-Fi adapter from the command line.
netsh interface set interface "Wi-Fi" admin=disabled
To reopen it:
netsh interface set interface "Wi-Fi" admin=enabled
💡 Why should I do it? Sometimes turning Wi-Fi off and on solves connection problems - like "restarting" Wi-Fi.
14 Check if the Internet is Working
Test whether you have actual internet access and how quickly the connection responds.
ping www.google.com
💡 How do I read it? If you see "Reply from..." it means it's working. If you see "Request timed out" or "Destination host unreachable", you have a problem. The "time=" number shows how fast the connection is (the lower the better).
15 Renew IP Address
Get a "new ID" from the router - it solves many connection problems.
ipconfig / release
ipconfig / renew
💡 When should I do it? When you are connected but no page opens, or you see a "No internet access" message.
16 See All Available Network Details
It displays much more information about networks, including the channels they use.
netsh wlan show networks mode=bssid
💡 For advanced users: Useful if you want to see what channels neighboring networks are using to set yours to a less crowded one.
17 Create Diagnostics Report
Create a complete report with all your Wi-Fi history - useful for identifying recurring problems.
netsh wlan show wlanreport
💡 Where is it located? The file is saved in: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\WlanReport\wlan-report-latest.html - Open it with your browser.
18 View your Network Settings
It displays your IP address, router address, and other basic information.
ipconfig
💡 For more details: Use ipconfig /all - you will see much more information.
19 Clear the DNS Cache
Empty the cache that "remembers" web page addresses - solves problems with pages not opening.
ipconfig / flushdns
💡 When is it useful? When some pages don't open while others work normally.
20 View Network Usage Statistics
It shows how much data has been sent and received since the last reboot.
netstat -e

💡 Useful Tips

📝 Copy-Paste: To avoid mistakes, copy the commands from here and paste them into CMD (right-click → Paste).

⌨️ Pay attention to the Capitals: Network names are case sensitive. If your network is called "MyWiFi", you should spell it exactly like that.

📁 Create a Favorite Commands File: Open Notepad and write down the most useful commands with your own network names. You'll always have it ready!

🔄 Try Restarting: If a command doesn't work, try restarting the computer.

🛡️ Security: Do not share the codes displayed by these commands with strangers.

🎯 What You Can Do with These Commands

✅ Recover forgotten Wi-Fi passwords
✅ Diagnose and solve connection problems
✅ Create a hotspot for mobile phones and tablets
✅ Manage multiple networks efficiently
✅ Improve connection speed and stability
✅ Keep backups of your settings

🚀 Tip: Don't be afraid to experiment! Most of these commands simply display information without changing anything. And for the commands that make changes, you can always revert them.
